San José Holds First Regional Special Olympics

Inspired by the success of Costa Rica’s special athletes recently in Shanghai, China, the San JoséMunicipality held the city’s own Special Olympics last weekend.

The 2007 San José Special Olympics took place Nov. 9-11 at Plaza González Víquez, in the southern San José suburb of Hatillo, and in the neighborhood’s sports complex, according to a statement from the Costa Rican Special Olympics committee.

The event included swimming, soccer, track and field and cycling competitions. The event was the first of a series of regional competitions to be held from now through May in different towns around Costa Rica. Next month’s competition will take place in the Northern Zone town of Upala.

In June, national finals will be held to determine which athletes will go on to represent Costa Rica in the Central American and Caribbean Games at the end of next year.
