Absolute Poker owner receives 14-month jail term

From the print edition

Brent Beckley, owner of Costa Rica-based Absolute Poker, received a 14-month prison sentence Monday for bank fraud, Reuters reported.

Beckley pleaded guilty in a federal court in the U.S. state of New York for “conspiring to break U.S. laws against gambling on the Internet,” and charges of conspiracy to commit bank fraud and wire fraud.

U.S. federal authorities seized absolute Poker, one of the world’s largest Internet poker sites, last year. A judge gave Becker, 32, the lengthy prison sentence to send a message about “these types of cases” involving Internet gambling and fraud.

Correction: The original story stated Becker received a 14-year not 14-month prison term.
