Foreign Ministry asks Ticos abroad to register with consulates

Foreign Vice Minister Carlos Roverssi asked all Costa Rican nationals living or traveling abroad to register with the nearest consulate or embassy in order to have a better control of their location in case of an emergency, such as Monday’s bombing during the Boston Marathon.

Roverssi said the recommendation is not intended to control the movements of Ticos abroad, but “to improve safety when they leave the country.”

He added that two Costa Rican consuls were sent on Monday to the U.S. to verify the status of nationals participating in the marathon, but so far there are no reports of Ticos affected by the explosions, which killed three people and injured more than 100 others.

According to official records, some 250,000 nationals live outside the country.
