Costa Rican pork exporters seek approval to enter Chinese market

A group of officials from China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine arrived Friday in Costa Rica to negotiate sanitary protocols for allowing the entrance of pork into the Asian country’s markets.

Officials from the National Animal Health Service and the Foreign Trade Ministry will meet the Chinese delegation to discuss the procedures. 

Foreign trade officials hope to secure the approval of the Chinese government, as it would allow increasing the number of Tico products sent to the Asian giant.

“The Costa Rican export sector has great opportunities in the Chinese market, and the approval of this new protocol would allow us to increase and diversify exports” Foreign Trade Minister Anabel González said.

Costa Rica already approved sanitary protocols with China to export bananas, leather, beef and dairy products, and is currently working on obtaining authorization to export pork, chicken, seafood, pineapple and melon.
