Twelve temblors registered over the weekend in Costa Rica

The Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) registered 12 earthquakes over the weekend in locations all across the country.

According to OVSICORI and the National Seismological Network, four had epicenters in the province of Cartago, east of San José, with magnitudes ranging from 2.8-3.5.

The two strongest quakes occurred on Sunday in Tamarindo, in the northwestern province of Guanacaste, with magnitudes of 4.8 and 4.2.

A magnitude-3.3 quake also was reported on Sunday at 3:12 a.m. near the border with Nicaragua.

The Caribbean region also recorded several earthquakes, the strongest – a magnitude 3.5 – occurring at 9:53 a.m. on Sunday near the border with Panama.

Most of these quakes were only moderately felt in the provinces of Alajuela, Heredia and San José, and there were no reports of damage or injuries.
