Costa Rican prosecutors seize documents related to failed refinery project

Agents from the Prosecutors’ Office on Tuesday raided the main facilities of Costa Rica’s National Oil Refinery (RECOPE) and offices of the Chinese-Costa Rican Reconstruction Corporation, which was tasked with conducting environmental impact and feasibility studies for building a new refinery in the Caribbean province of Limón.

RECOPE spokesman José Mario Guzmán said the action is linked to the failed project of upgrading RECOPE’s current refinery at Moín Port.

Judicial officials also raided the main facilities of the National Technical Secretariat of the Environment Ministry. The prosecutors seized documents related to the refinery project in all the locations.

RECOPE’s employees were given the day off and the entrance is not allowed for visitors or staff.
