Limón stays atop Costa Rican First Division with Sunday win

The green and white Limonenses blistered Puntarenas, 4-1, on Sunday to remain in first place in Group A of the Costa Rican First Division. Through the first 10 games of the 16-game season, Limón has accumulated 21 points (6-1-3) and remain two points ahead of perennial national power Saprissa, which beat Cartago, 2-1, on Sunday.

After Yozhimar Reid opened the scoring for Limón in the 28th minute, Kareem McLean scored twice for Limón in the 40th and 51st minutes before Kurt Bernard added the final tally in the 76th. On the season, Limón has a plus-13 goal differential, tops in the First Division.

This is the first time since 1998 that Limón has held the top spot in the First Division. The Limonenses returned to the First Division in June 2010 after spending several years in the Second Division.

Next Sunday, Limón hosts Saprissa, which is currently in second place in Group A. On Feb. 9, Limón beat Saprissa 3-0 on Saprissa’s home turf in Tibás, north of San José.
