Aeroméxico flight from Costa Rica canceled because pilots were allegedly drunk

Álvaro Vargas, deputy director of Civil Aviation in Costa Rica for Aeroméxico, reported that two Aeroméxico pilots were allegedly drunk as they attempted to pilot a plane carrying 101 passengers from Costa Rica to Mexico, according to Mexico’s Vanguardia newspaper. The rest of the crew prevented the flight from taking off.

“The situation (…) Saturday was that one of them, the co-pilot, took a [breathalyzer test] and tested positive for alcohol, while the captain objected,” said Vargas, who said Aeromexico is further investigating the incident.

According to information released by the deputy director of the aviation company, the Boeing 737 was scheduled to leave Saturday afternoon from the Juan Santamaría International Airport in Costa Rica to the Mexico City International Airport. The flight was delayed for nearly 24 hours because the company had to send two new pilots.

Vargas told Vanguardia that he did not believe the passengers knew why the flight was suspended.
