5.3-magnitude earthquake in northern Costa Rica

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake rattled northern Costa Rica on Tuesday afternoon, causing minor damages in the Upala district of the northwest Alajuela province. According to the National Emergency Commission, the earthquake, which occurred at 2:11 p.m., resulted in minor damages and fallen items in homes near the epicenter. No injuries were reported.

In the past four years, the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (Ovsicori) recorded an average of 4,793 earthquakes in Costa Rica that registered a magnitude of 1.0 or greater on the Richter scale.
