Costa Rican track superstar Nery Brenes’ mother dies

The mother of world champion track athlete Nery Brenes died Monday night at Hospital Calderon, in San José. Maydela Rosalina Cardenas was 43.
A message sent out by Brenes’ athletic team confirmed the death. She had been suffering from pulmonary fibrosis for five years.

“With regret we inform you that the mother of our friend Nery Brenes died. You can send condelences to the email: condolenciasnery@ecconsultores.com,” the statement said.

Nery Brenes won the world indoor men’s 400m title in Istanbul in March. The Costa Rican sprinter is preparing for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
