Bakery Stand Lures Western Central Valley Residents

Few things can compete with the tempting aromas of breads, cakes and pastries fresh from the oven.

Sweet-scented cinnamon rolls, rich brownies, moist muffins, appetizing apple tarts and tasty pizzas are now available at the weekly farmers’ markets in the western Central Valley coffee towns of Atenas and Grecia, where every Friday and Saturday morning, respectively, Thomas and Jan Yatsko offer a rich assortment of North American-style, gourmet bakery products from their attractive market stand.

The couple from the U.S. state of Pennsylvania started their new enterprise, which includes a catering service, about half a year ago. A businessman and long-term resident of Atenas, Thomas brings 25 years of catering, restaurant and hospitality experience to the endeavor. Inspired by reading all manner of gourmet food publications, he delivers creative menus and savory food tailored to his customers’ requests.

Jan, an acclaimed artist, takes care of packaging and presentation of the homemade products, as well as distinctive flower arrangements for catered events.

With the exception of best sellers such as their sticky buns and cinnamon rolls, the Yatskos constantly adapt and expand their offerings. Five different types of breads, tropical fruit pies, cakes and desserts complement the assortment. Prices range from ¢400 ($0.70) for a brownie to ¢4,000 (about $7) for a whole apple pie.

To preorder special items or enquire about catering, call 2446-4039 or 8306-9767 or e-mail thomasyatsko@racsa.co.cr.
