Authorities Halted Christ Rock Quarry

The Ministry of Environment and Energy in September rescinded the environmental viability permit for a rock quarry project in Pérez Zeledón, in the country s Southern Zone, that residents had said threatened a 10-meter-tall statue of Jesus Christ that overlooks the expansive Valle de El General.

The ministry s move effectively ended a two-year dispute between residents who wished to protect the statue, a symbol of peace in the area, and the rock quarry concessionaire.
