Live Lounge Music Series Comes to Playas del Coco

There is a place for lounge music in Guanacaste, says the Italian owner of a bar known for soft music and “lounge” atmosphere in Playas del Coco, on the northern Pacific coast of the northwestern province.

“If people want to listen to good music in Guanacaste, they have to carefully anticipate the few concerts held in Papagayo, Liberia or Nicoya,” said Alessandro Del Bello, referring to area towns.

But Del Bello, who opened Café de Playa a year ago, hopes to make Playas del Coco the new musical magnet through a series of Friday-night concerts cosponsored by independent record label Papaya Music.

Pianist Manuel Obregón opened the series last week. The Escats are set to play tonight, and the ever-popular Malpaís is slated for Dec. 8.

Though most of the Friday concerts will be strictly “lounge,” on Dec. 31 the dance-music group Son Urbano will get Café de Playa patrons off their chairs to bring in the new year, according to Papaya Music.
