Slowed action in the South, Guanacaste still the place to be

Not a whole lot has changed on the fishing scene. On the Pacific side, the slowest action this week was down south. The billfish have been in hiding, and only some really nice roosters in the 40-pound range and some 20-30-pound cubera snapper have been saving the day for boats going out.

Further up the coast, Marlon up at Primo Tackle in Herradura reports that sails have been hit and miss but boats are averaging 2-4 sails per trip. Most boats have been splitting the day between sails and bottom fishing for grouper, which has been good but not red hot.

As usual for this time of year, Guanacaste is the place to be. Lots of sails and some marlin are being reported as well as some “bull-sized” dorado. Further north, outside Santa Rosa, lots of wahoo are being caught as well as dinner-sized snapper.

Tarpon fishing had been red hot until the ocean came up yesterday. Most of the fish are 50-60 pound teenagers, but they are everywhere. Anglers putting in the effort are taking 3-4 snook a day at the police post at Agua Dulce near Barra del Colorado. When the ocean calms down, the fishing should be great again.
