Arenal Report

The small gap in reporting from Arenal was caused by the twice-predicted end of the world. After all, if the event had occurred on either day, nobody would have been left to read the column.

Now there’s some catch-up to do. We hope everyone had a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Kool Kwanzaa, Fabulous Festus, Wonderful Winter Solstice, Bountiful Boxing Day, and a Happy New Year.

The Ladies of the Lake Christmas Bazaar/fund raiser was a great success, more than doubling last year’s monies used to support needs of the community. Ruth Fountaine and her squadron of volunteers worked many hours to ensure the event was well-advertised. A day of beautiful weather also helped boost overall attendance.

Kudos to the Plaza Del Café for donating the use of their huge salon and parking area. Local businesses also provided prizes for raffles and silent auctions. Donors included Gingerbread Restaurant, Las Brisas Restaurant, Iguana’s Bar and Restaurant, Moya’s restaurant and Café Macadamia. We encourage everyone to patronize them throughout the year.

Natalie MacDonald and Jeff and Allison Spencer each hosted delightful Christmas banquets. The New Year was welcomed with a scrumptious buffet and fireworks at Larry and Victoria Torley’s home. Their high hillside provided a perfect launch site for the fiery aerial display. In town the action centered at the Iguana’s, where crowds enjoyed great food and music provided by a DJ who kept things rocking.

Annie Welch hosted the first party of 2013 with an afternoon open house buffet featuring champagne for anyone in serious need of some hair of the dog. Hopes, dreams and plans for the New Year were shared among friends who love the pura vida of Costa Rica.
