Jacó Happenings

April 27, 2011

McKee Jacó continues to make a difference in the Central Pacific region. Last month’s castration events spayed or neutered more than 62 animals. Special thanks go to Peter van Hussen of Canciones del Mar for donating a place to stay for Dr. Lee Wilson, who, again this year, came all the way from Alaska to offer her help with surgeries. She not only donated her time, but also brought her own sutures and other supplies. Thanks also to Dr. Wendy Villalobos and the staff at the clinic for hosting the events and being a part of this great project, as well as to Doris Schluckebier for assisting in all surgeries. McKee has several animals that need homes; anyone who can help may contact Katja Bader at 2643-4012 or info@mckee-jaco.com.

Liana Robinson and Kevin Cantwell of the nonprofit Jacó Library have been working hard to get their CornerStones Education Foundation up and running. As part of the adventure, Liana and Anna Malloy have bought bikes to undertake a charity bicycle ride from Jacó to San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. The distance is some 600 kilometers, and they estimate it will take them about 10 days. The inspiration for this trip is to raise money to complete the Spanish-language section of the library’s youth center. The money will buy much-needed books for Jacó’s youth. Mead Brown Costa Rica Vacation Rentals is taking the lead and donating funds toward the children’s corner. If you would like to donate or volunteer at the library, contact Liana at cornerstones  foundation@gmail.com.

Alejandra Torres and Rosemarie Galluccio of Vida Asana are hosting a Masters Yoga Class with Esteban Salazar at the studio out in Playa Hermosa. Esteban is the founder of Krama Yoga Center in San José, and his class is influenced by anusara yoga, vinyasa flow and hot yoga. For more information, call Vida Asana at 2643-7108.

There is always a reason to go out and about in Jacó, and the Cinco de Mayo holiday is no exception. Specials will be offered throughout town for the occasion. Follow it up with Jaco Taco’s Kentucky Derby Day, May 7 from 2 to 7 p.m., with live music, derby pools and prizes for the best dressed. Get your best hat out and join the fun at Jaco Taco to wager on the crown-jewel stakes race for 3-year-old thoroughbred horses, staged yearly in Louisville, Kentucky.
