Jacó Happenings

March 26, 2010

Garabito’s new city council has been announced for the term of 2010 to 2016. Congratulations to Karla Gutiérrez, Arnoldo Alpízar, Freddy Castro, Julio Jara and Marielos Morales.

Look for extreme athletes in Jacó this weekend. The Extreme Challenge (www. atletismoextremo.com) will be held tomorrow, with athletes from all over the country participating in the 10K running event that will begin at the Jacó stadium at 4:30 p.m. The winners and prizes will be presented at Morgan’s Cove Resort at 7:30 p.m.

Jacó resident Angie González has opened the new JacóNutritionCenter at ParaísodelSolHotel, next to Tosso bakery 150 meters east of Pops. She has nutritional shakes, aloe juice, protein, herbal guarana tea, energy drinks and lots more to help improve your health. Stop by and see Angie or contact her at 8841-7127 for more information.

Spring break is upon us, and, for many, it’s time to hit the beach in Jacó and surf. There is no shortage of shops to set up a surf lesson or find a good board to rent or buy. The largest surf shop in Costa Rica, Chuck Herwig’s WOW (2643-3844, www.wowsurf.com) has been in business since 1988 and offers hundreds of surfboards and top-quality surf brands. The shop is in PalmPlaza on the north side of Jacó. B&B Surf Shop is one of the latest additions to Jacó and is definitely worth checking out. This shop not only has a cool new feel and look, but also offers some of the best clothing selections in town. It’s on the main road, next to Salsa Souvenir and across from Banco Nacional. Banana Surf, El PanaSurf, Arenas, Roka Loka, Mango, Walters Surf, Jacó Beach Village Surf and Jacó Surf are among the many others in central Jacó. Toward the south end are two of Costa Rica’s best surfboard shapers, Edwin “Cartón” Villalobos and Piko. Cartón hand-makes surfboards in his growing surf shop factory on Calle Madrigal, in front of Club del Sol (2643-3762, www.cartonsurfboards.com). Piko surf shop was founded in 1993 and is on the main highway heading toward Playa Hermosa.

Next week is Semana Santa, or Easter Holy Week, and the banks, utility offices, local clinic and municipality will all be closed Thursday and Friday.
