Flamingo/Potrero News

January 22, 2010

Most businesses are happy to report that the new year has started off well. Hotel bookings are up, and it is great to see the area looking more lively.

No update yet on whether the Surfside Supermarket will be reopening. Its destruction by fire was a devastating experience, but owner Cheryl Eckhart says she has found the many offers of help and support very heartwarming.

I am sad to report the Jan. 10 loss of Marcia Steiner, beloved wife of Ron, during surgery in San José. Marcia lived in Conchal and also Oceanica for a number of years and made many friends in our community.

Our deepest sympathies to Ron and family. Friends and family of Christopher Starbuck will welcome him home for vacation this week. Christopher, who is in the U.S. Coast Guard, is stationed on the icebreaker Polar Star, which recently returned from a  three-month deployment in the Arctic Ocean. He is definitely looking forward to seeing a little sunshine.

A movie club with DVD library will be starting up soon. Members can join by contributing 20 DVDs or $40. Rentals will be offered for a nominal management fee, and the movies will be available from Perla’s Cantina. Also in Potrero, The Shack is introducing happy hour from 4 to 7 p.m. daily.

The next Mardi Gras parade and party is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 16. This year, the parade starts in Playa Potrero on the beach in front of Las Brisas. Don’t miss the “drag race” on Saturday afternoon, starting at the Mariner Inn with stops at Amberes and Marie’s Restaurant.
