The Tico Times offers four-month writing and photography internships for aspiring journalists and photographers with relevant education and experience. Interns have the opportunity to learn the ropes in a newsroom, gain valuable hands-on experience and clips, and live and work in Costa Rica. Click here for opportunities to intern at The Nica Times in Nicaragua.
The writing internship is a full-time, working position. This intern writes a variety of features, news stories and briefs each week. Spanish fluency is a firm requirement, as most interviews and research must be conducted in Spanish. Because the writing intern primarily works for the Weekend section – the features, travel and arts/culture section – he or she has the opportunity to travel throughout the country to write travel stories and hotel reviews. However, most of the intern's time will be spent in the San José area.
The photography internship requires intermediate Spanish. This is also a full-time position, but with a flexible schedule. The photo intern works for the Weekend section and the news section, and shoots a wide variety of assignments. He or she may also take advantage of travel opportunities with the writing intern. The photo intern should have his or her own digital camera. Internship dates and application deadlines are as follows:
Spring Internship (January through April) – Apply by Sept. 20
Summer Internship (May through August) – Apply by Jan. 20
Fall Internship (September through December) – Apply by May 20
To apply, candidates must send the following items to our office by the specified deadline:
• A cover letter stating which internship you are applying for and explaining why you want to work for The Tico Times.
• A resume outlining your journalism/photography experience and Spanish skills/training.
• For writing internship candidates, at least three clips or writing samples; for photo candidates, a selection of feature photos (no landscapes).
• Additional information or items are accepted, but please do not go overboard.
Please send applications to Weekend Editor Meg Yamamoto via e-mail to myamamoto@ticotimes.net. |
